Heritage and Bandung in Brief PDF Print E-mail

HIBHeritage is what passed by one generation to the next, both tangible and intangible. UNESCO classifies heritage into 2 groups; cultural and natural heritage.

The city of Bandung inherits a wealth of urban heritage. This city, founded in 1810, boasts history of local, national to international scale, such as the plan to relocate the capital of the Dutch East Indies from Batavia (Jakarta) to Bandung in 1917 to the Asia Africa Conference. Even Hollywood’s famous silent movie actor, Charlie Chaplin, visited this city 3 times! Aside from that, Bandung also enjoys a special identity in the form of Art Deco architecture. In 2001, the Globetrotter placed Bandung on the 9th of 10 World Art Deco cities – the one and only in Asia. Just one year before, Asiaweek put Bandung on the 26th of The Best Asia Cities in terms of heritage conservation. Now, this historic city populated by 2.6 million people is one of tourist destination areas in Indonesia, offering various types of attraction from creative industry (strongly represented by culinary treats and fashion), its surrounding highlands, and its heritage.
